Grants & Professional Writing

This 4-weekend workshop invites visual artists at any stage of their practice to sharpen their voice and professional practice through writing, while navigating the world of grants and open calls. You will develop statements, bios, CVs, and portfolios—and put them into action by applying to a current opportunity that fits your practice.

October 25- November 15, 2025

$250 USD

Saturdays 12:00 pm-4:00 pm EST; Online

Open to all ages and levels; limited to 10 participants

This four-weekend workshop equips visual artists with the tools to confidently apply for grants, fellowships, and open calls. Participants are encouraged to bring an ongoing or completed body of work that they want to develop and share through the workshop. Through a combination of lectures, writing prompts, and peer review, participants will learn to develop clear, compelling professional materials—including artist and project statements, bios, CVs, and portfolios.

Alongside writing, the course introduces strategies for researching and identifying opportunities that align with your practice. Each participant will select one grant or open call to focus on from a pool of current, seasonally-recurring open calls, and learn to navigate and track upcoming ones. By the final session, we will have developed and submitted a completed application with guidance and feedback.

By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with polished application materials, practical tools for sustaining a writing practice for their visual work, and a deeper understanding of how to position their work in the broader arts landscape, sustainably.

Who might this benefit?

  • Visual artists of all ages, working across all mediums, and at all stages of their practice are welcome to apply.

  • Emerging artists in the first 5 years of their practice are especially encouraged.

  • Artists who have primarily relied on open call opportunities to gain recognition and visibility for their work. Open calls could be for solo and group exhibitions, artist residencies, grants, commissions, fellowships, awards, press, etc.

  • Self-taught artists, no prior degree in Art (BFA or MFA) is required.

  • Artists working with interdisciplinary mediums (photography, installation, text, video, sound, painting, sculpture, performance, etc.)

  • Artists willing to expand their current visual practice to incorporate writing, both personal and professional.

  • Artists who have an ongoing or completed body of work that they’re excited to develop and share.

  • Artists who have unfinished to-do lists of open call opportunities and need a group of like-minded people to build application materials with and successfully submit, without waiting for the night before deadlines.
